Easter Week Services

Dunbar United Church of Christ extends an invitation to join in its celebration of Easter with services on Thursday and Sunday of Easter Week.

On March 20th, Dunbar Church offers a Maundy Thursday service, remembering the events leading up to the death of Christ.  The service will begin at 7PM.

 On Easter Sunday, March 23rd, Dunbar Church and Church of the Ascension will join together to celebrate Easter with a traditional Sunrise Service at Hindinger’s Farm on Dunbar Hill Road at 6:45AM.  The service is followed by breakfast at Church of the Ascension.  Dunbar UCC will continue its celebration of Easter at its regularly scheduled Sunday service at 10 o’clock back at Dunbar Church.  All are welcomed to attend.  After service, the Board of Christian Education will hold an Easter Egg Hunt on the church grounds.

Ash Wednesday Service

Dunbar United Church of Christ will celebrate Ash Wednesday service on Wednesday, February 6th at 7:30PM.  Other churches participating include Mt. Carmel Congregational United Church of Christ, Spring Glen United Church of Christ, Hamden Plains United Methodist Church, and the Whitneyville United Church of Christ.  Dunbar United Church of Christ is located at 767 Benham Street, at the corner of Benham Street and Dunbar Hill Road.

All are welcome to attend this service marking the beginning of the Lenten season, the forty days of preparation before Easter.  A collection will be taken at the service to benefit the Hamden Fuel Bank.

Christmas Eve Candlelight Service at Dunbar United Church of Christ 

 

Dunbar United Church of Christ will host a Christmas Eve candlelight service at 5PM on Monday, December 24th.  This special service will highlight the congregation’s rich musical talent and include performances by members Betsy Pattison, Alex Shettleworth, and Norm Chicoine.

 

Musical selections for the evening will include traditional Christmas hymns such as O Come All Ye Faithful, The First Noel, Away in a Manger, and Silent Night as well as the Dunbar Choir performing God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and Jesu Bambino.  Also featured will be a “Raise the Roof” performance of Hark the Herald Angels Sing, with a special twist!

Christmas Events at Dunbar United Church of Christ 

Dunbar United Church of Christ has the following plans for celebrating the Christmas season.

Sunday, December 9th, directly after service, the Board of Christian Education will stage the annual Christmas pageant in Fellowship Hall on the lower level of the church.  The pageant will be performed by the children of the congregation.  Afterwards, the church will hold its Advent Workshop, featuring arts and crafts activities for the youngsters and the young at heart. 

The following Sunday, December 16th, the Sparkplugs Committee will host its annual evening of Christmas caroling from 5 until 7PM.  All are welcome to participate as the elderly, disabled or anyone in need of a little holiday spirit can receive a visit.  Participants are asked to meet at the church on the corner of Dunbar Hill Road and Benham Street by 5PM.   

Christmas will be celebrated with a Christmas Eve candlelight service at 5PM on Monday, December 24th.  All are welcome to this service of spirit and song.  For more information about any of these events, please contact Church Secretary Geneene Luedee at 288-2342.

39th Annual Apple Festival 

Dunbar United Church of Christ will hold its 39th Annual Apple Festival on Saturday, October 27th from 10AM to 2PM.  The Apple Festival, hosted by the Women’s Fellowship, offers a wide variety of baked goods including Dunbar’s famous apple pies for just $9.  Festival goers can also enjoy a slice of apple pie or some apple crisp, apple pancakes, or aeble skivers, a Danish specialty, after shopping for handmade craft items, jewelry and bargains at “Grandma’s Attic” tag sale.  There will be games for the children and Apple Jenny with pockets full of surprises.  Profits from the Apple Festival go to outreach programs in the community as well as to the church’s scholarship fund.  Bring the family for a fun and delicious day.

The Apple Festival will take place rain or shine, and parking and admission are free.  Dunbar United Church of Christ is located at the corner of Dunbar Hill Road and Benham Street in Hamden and is easily reached by turning onto Benham Street from Dixwell Avenue at the Home Depot Plaza.  Visit the church website at www.dunbarchurch.com for more information about the church and its mission.

Apple Pie Time at Dunbar Church 

The Women's Fellowship at Dunbar United Church of Christ has begun making apple pies as part of their annual Apple Festival activities.  The group meets every Wednesday morning from 9:30 until noon to peel and slice apples, roll dough, and assemble and bake pies.  Volunteers are always welcome and no experience is needed. The church is located on the corner of Dunbar Hill Road and Benham Street.  Pie making takes place in Fellowship Hall on the lower level of the church. 

Famous Dunbar apple pies are also available for purchase, either frozen or freshly baked.  Frozen pies can be picked up on Wednesday mornings at the church.  Fresh baked pies must be ordered beforehand by calling Ginny Granquist at 248-5484 or Louise Mazur at 387-4140.  Pies can also be purchased at the Apple Festival, which will take place from 10 AM until 2 PM on Saturday, October 27 at Dunbar Church.  Proceeds from the sale of apple pies help support the church and many local charities.

Dunbar Church Adds Saturday Services

 

Dunbar United Church of Christ is pleased to announce that beginning on October 6, Saturday evening services will be offered at 5PM in the church sanctuary. Regular Sunday worship services will continue to be celebrated at 10AM, followed by coffee hour and fellowship. Dunbar United Church of Christ to Host Rally Day Festival

Dunbar Church Awards Scholarships

The Women’s Fellowship at Dunbar United Church of Christ recently awarded five $500 scholarships to members who are continuing their education at college next fall.  The scholarship recipients are Lauren Hurd, who will complete her college degree as a senior next year at Marist College in New York; Leslie Hurd, who begins at Marist College as a freshman in September; Katie Keenan, who will enter Southern Connecticut State University as a freshman this fall, Michelle Kresta, who will attend Quinnipiac University as a freshman; and Cara Peterson, who begins her freshman year at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in August.

Each year the Women’s Fellowship awards scholarships to applicants from the Dunbar congregation.  The scholarship money is raised, in part, through the Apple Festival, which is held at the end of October each year, and through other fund raising activities.   To learn more about the Women’s Fellowship and Dunbar United Church of Christ, visit the church website at www.dunbarchurch.com.

Dunbar United Church of Christ Announces Easter Services

Dunbar United Church of Christ extends an open invitation to join in its celebration of Easter with services on Thursday and Sunday of Easter Week. 

Maundy Thursday Service will take place April 5th from 7-8PM at Dunbar United Church of Christ, located on the corner of Benham Street and Dunbar Hill Road.  Dunbar UCC and Church of the Ascension will join together to celebrate Easter with a traditional Sunrise Service at Hindinger’s Farm on Dunbar Hill Road at 6:15AM on Easter Sunday, April 8th, followed by breakfast at the Church of the Ascension, located just around the corner from Hindinger’s Farm.  Dunbar UCC will continue its Easter celebration at its regularly scheduled Sunday service at 10 o’clock back at Dunbar Church.  All are welcomed to attend.

Dunbar United Church of Christ Donates to Local Charities

At this year's Annual Meeting of the Dunbar United Church of Christ, held on January 21st, the congregation's Women’s Fellowship announced the distribution of proceeds from their annual apple pie sale and Apple Festival.  The Apple Festival, a Dunbar tradition which dates back to 1969, features the sale of home made apple pies, apple butter, apple cider, apple crisp and other food items as well as a Bazaar Table, Grandma’s Attic tag sale, and games and activities for children. 

The Apple Festival this past year raised more than $6500, of which $5500 was donated to a wide variety of local, national and international charities.  Organizations receiving donations were decided at the January meeting of the Women’s Fellowship.  Among this year’s recipients were the Hamden Food Bank, Hamden Fuel Bank, Christian Community Action, St. Ann’s Soup Kitchen, Habitat for Humanity, FISH, the Children’s Community Center, Hamden YMCA Scholarship Fund, Teen Challenge, Meals on Wheels, the Heifer Project, Connecticut Hospice, Columbus House, Interfaith Caregivers, the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross.
